reflecting positive attribution of cultural diversity through the story of Cinderella
The Cinderella
Artist: Quan
Why "The Cinderella"?
The Cinderella is a mix media collage artwork that represents the positive attribution of diversity. This became Quan's focus for her final year project in the Bachelor of Visual Arts at Southern Institute of Technology (SIT).
Since young, Quan has been amazed by the enchantment of fairy tale stories, especially the popularized of it from the Disney animation.
During her studies in SIT, cultural diversity is the topic she found that interests her the most. She highlights human should treat each other equally, as all of us is the same, human wants to be accepted and treated equally.
This idea came from her own experience while living in Malaysia and now New Zealand. Both countries have high readings on diversity. Born as a Malaysian Chinese, she has been exposed to the inequality of race that is caused by the former ruling party, Barisan National (BN). The corrupted political regime uses culture as a political tool to win over elections. Coming to New Zealand is another experience of diversity that supports diversity by holding events of multiculturalism like food stall, performance and so on. Both of the citizens from each country, especially secondary citizenship holders seek acceptance in society. Proving that humans are the same.
The story of Cinderella is an internationally known story that also readapted in many cultures, like Malay: Bawang Puteh Bawang Merah, French: Cendrillon (This version is adapted by Disney's Cinderella) and Chinese: Yeh Xian. Due to this similarity, Cinderella is a great story to incorporate my personal feelings by reflecting on myself as Cinderella.
Three specific scenes will be used on "The Cinderella". Scene 1: Living in despair. Scene 2: The transformation. Scene 3: Happily ever after. The scenes also reflect her emotions of understanding cultural diversity.
The gallery below shows the shift of artwork created from term 1 to term 4.
